Brand New Heavies

Warsaw's Zoo has a couple of very large new additions – two African elephants Ninio and Joni. They flew in on a cargo plane from Israel last Thursday and have been getting adjusted to their new environs.
The elephants are reputed to be feeling well and have been talking walks in their 4,800-square-metre grounds. Visitors have been allowed to admire them since Monday.
The elephants will shed their old names – one has already become Lotek, in honour of Totalizator Sportowy SA, which cofinanced their purchase. The other one should receive its name soon.
The elephant house is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Europe. The main room has a gigantic 800-squaremetre viewing area, which includes tropical surroundings for the animals and visitors, in addition to a pool and artificial waterfall for the elephants.
The new elephants replace Sonia, their Indian cousin, whose death left Warsaw's zoo elephant-less for several years. Zoo officials say that plans are also afoot to bring in a new pair of rhinoceroses to Warsaw, but they don't want to speculate on when that might happen.
