Prime Minister Leszek Miller was injured when a helicopter in which he was travelling crash-landed near the Warsaw suburb of Piaseczno on Thursday evening. The extent of his injuries was not clear when this issue was being closed, but doctors at the government hospital in Warsaw said he had "suffered bone injuries".
An unnamed eyewitness told the TVN24 news channel that the helicopter hit a tree and then crashed some 500 metres farther on. Another told PAP that it had "rocked in the air" before crashing.
"I thought that it tilted to one side," the unnamed witness said. "Then it fell into the woods and got stuck on a tree."
PAP and TVP reported that the crash landing was caused by the failure of both engines on the Soviet-era Mi-8 helicopter.
Preliminary reports said that three other people were injured besides the prime minister. Miller's chief political advisor, Aleksandra Jakubowska was also aboard the chopper, but no reports regarding her health were available. According to the police, one person was still trapped in the helicopter at press time.
